Northern lights tours in Rovaniemi: hunt, snowshoe or photograph
All three tours leave from Rovaniemi in the evening, include warm outer clothing in winter and bring you back to your door. Choose by how you like to spend the wait: on the move, around a fire or behind a camera.
Aurora Hunt by minibus
4.5 hours · 20:00 to 00:30
Up to 14 guests
Late August to early April
The hunt is for people who want the best odds on a single night. The guide picks the direction after the 17:00 forecast check and keeps moving if the cloud closes in, within about 90 minutes of town. We stop at two or three dark spots, usually a frozen lake or an open fell top, and light a fire at the best one.
A slower night for people who would rather walk than ride. After a short drive, we put on snowshoes and follow an easy forest trail of about three kilometres to a lean-to shelter. Dinner cooks over the fire while the guide talks about Lapland's winter, the stars and the old stories about the fox whose tail lit the sky.
Our smallest group and our latest night. A photographer guide sets up each camera on a tripod, explains manual focus, shutter speed and ISO in plain words, and helps with framing so there is a tree line or a cabin in front of the sky. Phones are welcome too: we show you their night mode settings.
Only one night free? Choose the Aurora Hunt, because it can move. Travelling with children or prefer a calm evening? Snowshoe & Campfire. Bringing a camera you have never used at night? The Photography Tour. Not sure yet? Look at the departure calendar for nights that still have seats, or read the season and clothing FAQ first.
